New flood-mitigation funding announced for New York and New Jersey

Published July 27, 2026

What FEMA's June 2026 mitigation announcement may mean for property owners and future flood risk.

Request a confidential claim review

FEMA announced in June 2026 that nearly $10 million in federal funding was available to New York and New Jersey for eligible pre-disaster flood-mitigation work. The announcement concerns risk reduction rather than payment of an individual insurance claim.

Mitigation and insurance solve different problems

Mitigation funding is intended to reduce future damage. Insurance addresses covered loss under an issued policy. A grant announcement does not itself expand private property coverage or replace the need to follow claim conditions.

Records worth preserving

  • Flood maps and local mitigation notices
  • Elevation, drainage and engineering records
  • Permits and invoices for completed protective work
  • Photographs showing the property before and after improvements
  • Private flood and homeowners policy forms and renewals

Flood coverage is policy-specific

Many homeowners policies treat flood differently from water released by a plumbing system or entering through storm damage. Property owners should identify which policy may respond and avoid assuming that every form uses the same definition.
