State insurance regulators are collecting detailed homeowners-insurance data from insurers across the country. The project will not decide an individual claim, but it may give regulators a clearer picture of how cost, coverage and claim outcomes differ by place and type of loss.
What information regulators requested
The National Association of Insurance Commissioners says the data call covers policy years 2018 through 2025 and asks qualifying insurers for ZIP Code-level information.
- Home, renter, condominium and mobile-home policy types
- Claims and losses broken down by cause
- Premiums, deductibles and coverage limits
- Cancellations and nonrenewals
- Replacement-cost, actual-cash-value and mitigation information
Why policyholders may care
A broader data set may help regulators compare availability, affordability and claim patterns. It may also show where particular causes of loss, deductibles or coverage arrangements create pressure for consumers.
What the data call does not do
The project does not change a policy's wording, reverse a denial or extend a deadline. A specific claim still turns on the issued policy, loss facts, evidence, carrier position and applicable law.
